How to Calculate Framing Studs

The standard formula for stud count at 16" OC is: (wall length in feet × 0.75) + 1. At 24" OC it's: (wall length in feet × 0.5) + 1. Then add extra studs for corners, intersections, and openings.

Standard Stud Additions

16" vs 24" On-Center

16" OC is standard in most residential applications — stronger, better for tile and heavy finishes. 24" OC uses ~30% fewer studs, cutting lumber cost, and is common in energy-efficient construction where insulation fills the cavity.
