Gravel is sold by the ton or cubic yard depending on the supplier. This calculator gives you both so you can order accurately regardless of how your supplier prices material.
The Formula
Volume (cu ft) = Length × Width × (Depth ÷ 12). Convert to cubic yards by dividing by 27. Then multiply cubic yards by the material's density to get tons.
Recommended Depths by Application
Driveway base layer — 4"–6" of compacted crushed stone
Driveway top layer — 2"–3" of pea gravel or decorative stone
Drainage French drain — 12"+ of clean crushed stone
Landscaping beds — 2"–3" of pea gravel or decorative rock
Walkways & paths — 3"–4" of compacted gravel
Tons vs. Cubic Yards
Most quarries and suppliers price by the ton (weight)
Landscaping suppliers sometimes price by the cubic yard (volume)
1 cubic yard of crushed stone ≈ 1.35 tons
Always confirm the density with your supplier — it varies by material and moisture content
