What Goes Into Concrete Cost Per Square Foot?

Concrete pricing isn't just "material + labor." Understanding each component helps you bid accurately and spot when a quote is too high โ€” or suspiciously low.

Materials (~$5 โ€“ $7 per sq ft)

Ready-mix concrete typically runs $140 โ€“ $165 per cubic yard delivered in 2026. For a standard 4-inch slab, that translates to roughly $5 โ€“ $7 per square foot in material alone. Costs vary by mix design โ€” a 4,000 PSI mix costs more than a standard 3,000 PSI residential mix.

Labor (~$3 โ€“ $6 per sq ft)

Labor covers forming, pouring, screeding, floating, and finishing. Simple broom-finish work runs $3 โ€“ $4 per square foot. Stamped or exposed-aggregate finishes push labor to $5 โ€“ $6+ due to additional skill and timing requirements.

Extras That Add Up

Regional Concrete Costs (2026)

Concrete prices vary significantly by region due to material availability, labor markets, and local building codes. These are average ranges for a basic 4" residential slab.

Region Materials / sq ft Labor / sq ft Total / sq ft
Northeast$5.50 โ€“ $7.50$4 โ€“ $6$9.50 โ€“ $13.50
Southeast$4.50 โ€“ $6.50$3 โ€“ $5$7.50 โ€“ $11.50
Midwest$5 โ€“ $7$3.50 โ€“ $5.50$8.50 โ€“ $12.50
Southwest$5 โ€“ $7$3 โ€“ $5$8 โ€“ $12
West Coast$6 โ€“ $8$5 โ€“ $7$11 โ€“ $15
Mountain West$5.50 โ€“ $7.50$3.50 โ€“ $5.50$9 โ€“ $13

Note: Urban areas within each region tend to run 10-20% higher than rural areas due to labor rates and site access constraints.

Factors That Affect Concrete Pricing

Slab Thickness

Going from 4" to 6" adds 50% more material. A 20ร—20 ft slab at 4" requires ~4.9 cubic yards; at 6" it needs ~7.4 yards. Thickness is often the single biggest cost driver for slabs.

Site Conditions

Grade work, tree root removal, poor soil requiring over-excavation, and limited access for the concrete truck all add cost. Expect $1 โ€“ $3/sq ft for significant site prep on challenging lots.

Reinforcement

Wire mesh is cheapest ($0.50/sq ft) but least strong. #4 rebar at 12" on-center is standard for driveways ($1 โ€“ $1.50/sq ft). Post-tension slabs used in expansive soil areas cost $1.50 โ€“ $2.50/sq ft more.

Finish Type

Time of Year

Concrete work in cold weather requires hot water, blankets, or accelerators โ€” adding $1 โ€“ $2/sq ft. Summer is peak season with higher labor rates but ideal curing conditions.
