Calculate pool volume in gallons, fill time, water weight, and initial chlorine dosing for any pool shape. Supports rectangular, circular, oval, and kidney shapes.
Knowing your exact pool volume is essential for chemical dosing, equipment sizing (pumps, filters, heaters), and estimating fill costs. An over- or under-estimated volume leads to incorrect chemical levels, which can damage the pool surface or create unhealthy water conditions.
Kidney/Freeform: 0.45 × (A + B) × Length × Average Depth × 7.48 (where A and B are widths at widest points). Simplified: ~85% of the bounding rectangle.
Chemical Dosing by Volume
Chlorine (initial shock): 1 lb granular per 10,000 gallons to achieve ~10 ppm
pH adjustment: 1.5 lbs soda ash per 10,000 gal to raise pH by 0.2
Stabilizer (CYA): 1 lb per 3,000 gal to raise CYA by 10 ppm
Salt (for SWG): ~50 lbs per 1,000 gal to reach 3,200 ppm
Fill Time & Water Costs
A standard garden hose flows about 540 gallons per hour (9 gal/min). A 20,000-gallon pool takes roughly 37 hours to fill. Many municipalities charge $3–$8 per 1,000 gallons. Some areas offer pool fill discounts by waiving sewer charges since the water doesn't enter the sewer system. Call your water utility before filling to check for discounts or restrictions.
Pool Construction Types
Gunite/Shotcrete: Most customizable, most expensive ($35,000–$65,000+). Sprayed concrete over rebar frame, then plastered. Lasts 50+ years.
Vinyl liner: Steel or polymer wall panels with a vinyl liner. Most affordable ($25,000–$45,000). Liner replacement every 7–15 years (~$4,000–$7,000).
Fiberglass: Pre-formed shell set into excavated hole ($25,000–$55,000). Fastest install (1–2 weeks). Limited shapes and sizes.
