Retaining walls hold back soil and prevent erosion on sloped properties. Accurate material estimation requires knowing the block dimensions, wall size, and whether drainage and reinforcement are needed.
The Block Count Formula
Blocks per course = Wall Length × 12 ÷ Block Face Width. Total courses = Wall Height × 12 ÷ Block Face Height. Total blocks = Blocks per course × Courses.
Example: A 30 ft long × 3 ft tall wall using standard 8" face blocks = (30 × 12/8) × (3 × 12/4) = 45 × 9 = 405 blocks.
Gravity vs. Reinforced Walls
Gravity walls (under 4 ft) — Rely on weight and setback alone to resist soil pressure
Reinforced walls (over 4 ft) — Require geogrid layers extending into the retained soil
Most municipalities require engineering for walls over 4 feet tall
Geogrid layers typically placed every 2 courses (8"–12") for walls 4–8 ft tall
Geogrid extends into retained soil at least 60% of the wall height
Drainage Behind Retaining Walls
Water pressure is the #1 cause of retaining wall failure — drainage is critical
12" minimum width of clean ¾" crushed stone behind the wall, full height
4" perforated drain pipe at the base, sloped to daylight at ends
Landscape fabric separates native soil from drainage gravel to prevent clogging
Gravel volume: approximately 1 cu ft per linear foot per foot of wall height
Permit Requirements
Walls under 4 ft generally don't require a permit in most areas (check locally)
Walls 4 ft and taller typically require an engineered design and building permit
Walls near property lines may require setbacks — verify with your local zoning department
Walls supporting surcharge loads (driveways, structures) may require engineering regardless of height

Base Preparation
Excavate a level trench 6"–8" deep and 24" wide for the base course
Compact 4"–6" of crushed stone base material (not pea gravel)
First course should be partially buried for stability — at least half the block height
Each course should set back (batter) ¼" to ¾" for structural stability
