Asphalt is ordered by the ton. This calculator converts your paving area and desired thickness into the exact tonnage needed, accounting for compacted density differences between hot mix and cold patch materials.
The Formula
Volume (cu ft) = Length × Width × (Thickness ÷ 12). Tons = Volume × Density (lb/cu ft) ÷ 2000. Hot mix asphalt compacts to approximately 145 lb/cu ft, while cold patch is roughly 140 lb/cu ft.
Hot Mix vs. Cold Patch
Hot mix asphalt (HMA) — heated to 300°F, compacted with rollers, used for driveways, roads, and parking lots. Lasts 15–20 years.
Cold patch — pre-mixed, no heating required, used for pothole repair and small patches. Temporary fix lasting 1–3 years.
Hot mix requires professional equipment; cold patch can be DIY.
Asphalt Thickness by Application
Residential driveway — 2"–3" over a 4"–6" gravel base
Commercial parking lot — 3"–4" over a 6"–8" base
Overlay / resurfacing — 1.5"–2" over existing pavement
Heavy truck traffic — 4"–6" full depth with engineered base
Gravel Base Requirements
Nearly all new asphalt installations require a compacted aggregate base. A 4" base is standard for driveways; commercial lots typically need 6"–8". The base provides drainage, prevents frost heave, and distributes load. Skipping the base is the #1 cause of premature asphalt failure.
